Why Are Ziollo Products The Best Option?

Question: Which products do I use?

Answer: You can use Ziollo RV Roof Sealant.

Question: What kind of roof do I have?

Answer: The first step of using Ziollo RV Roof Sealant is to determine your roof’s material. Here is some info to help you determine RV roof type:

1. EPDM - Smooth & rubbery. White top and black bottom. Most common RV Roof material.

2. TPO - Textured & plasticky. Same color top and bottom usually. Also quite popular.

3. Metal/Aluminum - Looks like a metal roof. Grey/silver, smooth and might be shiny or painted.

4. Fiberglass - Smooth hard gel like surface.

5. PVC/Vinyl - Smooth & plasticky. Same color top and bottom.

It may also state your roof type in your owners manual.

You can also call the manufacturer with the year/make/model and they can tell you what they made the roof out of.

Question: Do I need a primer?

Answer: Primer is critical for TPO roof Applications. Use Ziollo TPO RV Roof Primer for TPO roofs and follow our application guideline. Primer is not needed for other common RV Roof Types.

Question: Do I need Seam Tape or Lap Sealant?

Answer: Answer: Yes. Seam Tape is the best choice for RV Roofs as it has it's own waterproof membrane and is easy to install (just peel and stick). These products are used to reinforce against thermal and other movement to prevent cracking in the area's most likely to experience leaking. Ziollo RV Roof Lap Sealant is used mainly for maintenance of previously sealed vents and joints by aplying over the old Lap Sealant. It can be used in conjunction with the Seam Tape prior to Priming and Coating. Refer to application guidelines for more information.

Answer: Answer: When applying Seam Tape as part of a system use our Paintable Seam Tape.

Answer: Answer: As a cheaper, quick, stand alone solution use our Repair Seam Tape.

Question: How much do I need?

Answer: Answer: To determine how much sealant or primer you need, divide your total square footage by the coverage rate provided. Example: You have a 240 sq ft roof and the RV Roof Coating coverage rate is 1 gallon per 60 sq ft. so 240/60 = 4 gallons of the RV Roof Sealant. Coverage rates are expressed in final coverage and will include all coats needed to achieve membrane thickness. Question: What tools do I need to apply my Ziollo products?

Answer: Answer: Most of our coatings and primers are applied using a brush (for corners, edges, etc.) or 10mm (3/8") nap roller for large flat surfaces.

Answer: Technically you can spray it but you would need a heavy industrial sprayer capable of spraying a silicone coating.Most homeowners will not have access to this equipment.

Question: Do I need a new brush/roller every time I apply a new coat?

Answer: If you wrap your brush/roller in plastic (e.g. a grocery bag) you will slow down the curing process and you should be able to use the same brush/roller for your next coat. You can go a step further and place the plastic bag in the refrigerator (Do not allow contact with food).

Question: Can Ziollo products be applied to aluminum?

Answer: Yes. With proper preparation and cleaning Ziollo will protect and waterproof your aluminum roof. Refer to our application guidelines for more information.

Question: Can Ziollo products be applied to Fiberglass?

Answer: Yes. Ziollo products are often applied to fiberglass roofs. Refer to our guidelines to read more about how to bond to fiberglass.

Question: Ziollo products be applied to EPDM?

Answer: Yes. Ziollo products can be applied to EPDM with proper preparation and cleaning. Read our application guidelines for more information.

Question: Can Ziollo products be applied to TPO?

Answer: Yes. Ziollo products can be applied to TPO with proper preparation and cleaning. Ziollo TPO RV Roof Primer is required. Read our application guidelines for more information.

Question: Can I coat over Dicor or other Lap Sealants?

Answer: The first thing to do is inspect and replace degraded lap sealant as necessary using Ziollo RV Roof Lap Sealant.

Answer: You can apply over most cured lap sealants that are clean and dry. Some Lap Sealants may have high solvent contents so it is important to be sure they are well cured so that active solvents do not deteriorate your coating. Some lap sealants may be silicone based, these will not provide good bond for Seam Tape or Ziollo RV Roof Lap Sealant and should be removed and replaced with Ziollo RV Roof Lap Sealant. (Ziollo RV Roof Sealant should bond to silicone as it is also a silicone). If you are unsure as to what type of lap sealant you have, it is recommended to perform an adhesion test prior to full application.

Question: Can I coat over Eternabond Roof Seal Tape or other RV Roof Patch Tapes?

Answer: These tapes are often made of TPO or other hard to bond to materials. When applying over the Eternabond Tape you will want to scuff the surface, use Ziollo TPO RV Roof Primer and follow the same process for bonding to TPO roofs (as is outlined in our Application Guideline on the product page). For other tapes an adhesion test may be necessary.

Question: Can I coat over an existing coating or paint?

Answer: You can apply over most acrylic/latex, polyurethane, alkyd paint, epoxy paints/coatings with proper cleaning/preparation techniques. Keep in mind that when you apply over an existing coating or paint, if that coating/paint peels, our coating will peel with it as it is bonded to the existing coating/paint and not directly to the substrate.

Answer: It is recommended to remove oil based or recently applied coatings with high solvent content prior to applying your Ziollo products. (oil interfere with bond/adhesion and solvents can deteriorate our sealant). If there is an existing Silicone Roof Coating on your RV you should be able to bond to it with Ziollo RV Roof Sealant but not with our Lap Sealant or Seam Tape.

Question: Can I apply over tar or bitumen?

Answer: You will likely bond to the bitumen but the bitumen will also eventually bleed through the colored coating. It may be best to remove it or use a stain blocking primer made for tar/bitumen bleed-through.
